Itchy scalp

Introduction

Itching is caused by dryness and inflammation, flaking is due to shedding of old dead skin cells at a faster than usual rate.

This can be due to:

  • Seborrhaeic dermatitis – a common skin condition due to overgrowth of yeast on the skin. In babies this is called cradle cap.
  • Tinea capitis – a fungal infection and also called scalp ringworm.
  • Eczema – a common skin condition that causes skin to be dry, red, flaky and very itchy.
  • Allergic contact dermatitis – a reaction to products such as hair dye, spray, gel or mousse.
  • Psoriasis – a skin condition that causes red, flaky crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales.
  • Head lice – small whitish insects.

Treatment

Betacap is a scalp application that contains the active ingredient Betamethasone Valerate, which is a topical corticosteroid. These medicines are used to reduce inflammation. When the skin becomes irritated the immune system releases various chemicals, which causes the surrounded blood vessels to widen. This results in the affected area becoming red, itchy, swollen, and painful. These symptoms are commonly seen in conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

When Betamethasone is applied to the skin it begins to work inside the cells, inhibiting the release of the substances that cause inflammation. This reduces swelling, itching and redness.

Corticosteroids come in a range of potencies with Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% being classed as a potent corticosteroid. Betamethasone is generally prescribed to treat inflammatory skin disorders, including; eczema and psoriasis. Usually, betamethasone will only be considered if weaker corticosteroids have proven ineffective.

Betacap Scalp Application is used to treat inflammatory scalp disorders. The solution is a clear colourless liquid that contains Betamethasone Valerate 0.1%. Betacap is a potent, fast-acting corticosteroid used topically on the scalp. This medicine should be kept out of reach and sight of children. Do not store this medicine in temperatures in excess of 25 degrees celsius. Protect from direct sunlight and store in the original container. For external use only.

Betacap Scalp Application is normally applied twice daily. As soon as the condition starts to improve, you should reduce the frequency of application, or as directed by your doctor.

Betacap Scalp Application should be applied sparingly to the affected areas of the scalp, using the nozzle of the bottle. The solution can then be massaged into the scalp using clean, dry fingers if you wish. Betacap should then be left to dry.

Betacap is designed to be left on the scalp and should not be washed off. If you need to wash your hair, this should be done prior to application. Ensure your hair and scalp are dry before applying Betacap.

Take extra care to avoid the solution running onto your face and into your eyes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly using cool water. Avoid applying Betacap to broken skin. Washing your hands after application will help avoid accidently transferring the solution to other areas.

If after two weeks there is no noticeable improvement in your symptoms, you should consult with your doctor. Repeat courses of corticosteroid treatment may be required. However, these courses should only be started on the direct advice from your doctor.

Not everyone using Betacap Scalp Application will experience side effects. However, if you do, they can include:

  • Skin irritation (in rare cases)
  • Pustular psoriasis (puss-filled blisters)
  • Skin thinning
  • Adrenal suppression

Warning: Betacap contains coconut oil – it should not be used by people who suffer from nut allergies.
